Maria Müller Schareck wrote in The Language of Threads: “Etymologically, the word ‘text’ is derived from the Latin word textus, ‘woven’. Text and fabric are, as T’ai Smith puts it, ‘techniques that connect certain materials, processes, and patterns of thought into a texture – a material yet also conceptual rhythm’”. This passage was especially inspiring when thinking about the design of the book. Rhythmic compositions of text and images, white space and contrast are essentially the form of the content; they create different layers of meaning and form the thinking behind the book. The exposed binding suits the nature of her pieces so perfectly: the book itself becomes the object in the same way her woven artefacts do.
